Question 3:       Computer Science

Identify a data breach that has occurred in the Middle East. Briefly describe the organization whose data was breached and then answer these questions for each: 1- How did the breach get discovered? 2- How was the Incident Reporting (IR) process used? 3- How was the evidence handled? 4- What was the cost estimate of the breach? 5- What privacy data was taken or stolen? Your well-written report should be 4-5 pages in length, not including the title or reference pages. Use APA style guidelines, citing at least two references in support of your work, in addition to your text and assigned readings. You are strongly encouraged to submit all assignments to the Turnitin Originality Check.

Question 4:       Geography

Write a research paper on a current issue using theory and concepts from economic geography. Topic: The University of Toronto is changing. International tuition is rising. There is a mental health crisis on campus where students are demanding improved services, program and policy changes, and increased material supports. Instruction is increasingly being carried out by sessional instructors, supervised by a growing amount of administrative staff. The province has clawed back funding and restructured student fees. Today, provincial support accounts for less than a third of the total university budget. To make up for this, the University has expanded enrolment in expensive professional programs and seeks to expand international enrolment. However the austerity does not seem to impact the enormous capital projects on campus, including the new AI centre. In what ways is the University privatized, neoliberalized and financialized?

Instruction

Organization: The paper should have a creative title There should be an introduction which outlines the argument and the paper, with a clear thesis statement and argument. Introductions should introduce the paper and the argument (not just the topic). This could be followed by a theoretical framework section that explores a relevant theory from the course or economic geography. The main body of the paper should be used to forward the argument. Use description to map out the connections between actors, spaces, power relationships and flows of capital. However, description is not enough, it is important to develop and forward the argument in the paper. The conclusion should summarize the main points of the argument. Use research and findings from the annotated bibliography. Tips: A successful paper will present an original argument of its own. It will use others’ work to substantiate its position. A successful paper will move beyond simple paraphrasing of research from the annotated bibliography, but will utilize these texts to bring original insight and data to course concepts. The paper should use course themes. Try to keep your paper narrowly focused, avoid broad generalization, being too descriptive, or overly comparative. Avoid simply summarizing the materials: try to find an original thesis that weaves your sources and data together. This paper should seek de-naturalize assumptions about people, places and processes. Why are some countries called “advanced” or “developed” and why are some are allegedly not. Critically think about why some workers and jobs are allegedly “skilled” and which are “unskilled”. Why is some work “innovative” and “creative” and other work is not. An important task is to determine who has power and who does not? Does an uber driver or student intern have the power that their employers have? Do consumers have the power that executives have? In other words, you do not want to naturalize hierarchies of class, race, gender and ability: your task is to disturb the simplistic story that suggests evolution from uncivilized to civilized, from backward to modern, from undeveloped to developed, from uncreative to creative. Developing the argument is more important than description Have an original title Use subheadings to separate ideas Paraphrasing and summarizing sources is better than directly quoting Focus on clarity, simple clear writing is preferred Presentation matters, make sure the document looks good Explore the history of the space or sector The network of actors involved and their power relationships The geography of work, capital, production, distribution and consumption The various cultural meanings and contested politics of the space or sector Requirements: 2000-2200 words (not including title page and bibliography, only the main body text) Minimum 4 scholarly sources (not already on the syllabus) Minimum 4 popular sources Double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman (or similar serif font) Cite all lecture material APA citation style for all in text citations and bibliography

Question 20:     Human Resource Management

 Case Study

Imagine you’re the VP of Human resources for a Fortunate 100 company. You’ve spent your entire career attempting to enhance the workplace for employees to support their productive work in the organization. While you understand that bottom-line decisions often dominate many of the matters you have to address. You have worked hard to ensure that the employees were treated with respect and dignity in all interactions that affected them. You aligned the hiring process to serve the strategic needs of the organization, as well as implemented an effective performance management system. You truly believe in the progress you’ve made in helping the organization achieve its goals. You simply couldn’t imagine doing things differently. However, concern that the performance management process is becoming less effective because managers are inflating employee ratings has led 15 percent of all large organizations to adjust their performance management to what is frequently called “rank and yank”. Under such a system, managers are evaluated as 1, 2, 3 or 4, with 1 being the highest rating and 4 the lowest. In many cases, managers are required to give a 4 rating to the lowest 10 percent of employees each year.  Those individuals receiving a rating of 4 for two consecutive years are often let go from the organization.

The intent behind this system is that the throughout the two year process, evaluators are to meet frequently with the four employees, counsel them and provide necessary development opportunities. Employees in organizations that employ such a performance management system often view this process unbearable. They view the performance management process as punitive, one in which the organization is attempting to rid itself of higher-paid older workers. In at least one case, Ford Motor Company employees have filed a lawsuit to stop this practice—and prevailed .Ford removed the punitive nature of its evaluation system—and focused it more on counselling and performance improvement of the lowest-rated employees rather than elimination from the organization.

How the industry is reacting to COVID-19

The spread of COVID-19 is affecting the broadcast industry in many ways. Use the links below, as well as information you gather from news and industry sites on the web, as points of discussion.

I’d like everyone to make two posts:

  1. Response to threat: How are networks/stations responding to coronavirus? Cancelling coverage, keeping employees safe, etc. Have you noticed any changes when watching television? What ideas do you have to keep employees safe?
  2. Opportunities: How is the industry filling gaps? Live-streaming events instead of gathering crowds in person, etc. Do you have any ideas along these lines?

Then, please comment on three of your classmates’ posts. Note: you must make your posts before you can see anyone else’s replies.

Question 29:     Business

Instruction

In 2000, the high flying company Enron completely collapsed taking venerable accounting and audit firm Arthur Anderson along with it. There were some warning signs, but right up to the end, an examination of the company’s financial statements showed a healthy company with no reason to be concerned. Of course, the numbers were fiction, as were many of the operations of the company itself. This meltdown ultimately led to passage of the Sarbanes- Oxley Act of 2002, which requires the CEO, CFO, CIO and all of their supporting managers to certify that the financial information being reported is correct and accurate. Penalties for failure to comply are severe. Plato wrote of the analogy of the Cave – prisoner’s only experience of reality is what they see reflected in the shadows on the blank wall in front of them. Think about the financial statements discussed this week. How are they real and how are they simply reflected shadows? And if they are simply reflected shadows, what do we need to do as managers to ensure that they are an accurate reflection of the business, and not just a shadow?

As was discussed last week, a manager’s primary goal is to maximize the wealth of a firm’s owners by increasing the value of his or her firm’s stock. Value is based on the stream of cash flows the firm will generate in the future. But how does an investor go about estimating future cash flows, and how does a manager decide which actions are most likely to increase cash flows? The answer to both questions lies in a study of the financial statements that publicly traded firms must provide to investors. Here, “investors” include both institutions (banks, insurance companies, pension funds, and so forth) and individuals. Thus, this week’s lesson begins with a discussion of what the basic financial statements are, how they are used, and what kinds of financial information users need.

The value of any business asset-whether it is a financial asset such as a stock or a bond, or a real (physical) asset such as land, buildings, and equipment-depends on the usable, after-tax cash flows the asset is expected to produce. Therefore, this week we will focus on the difference between accounting income and cash flow. Finally, since it is after-tax cash flow that is important we will briefly look at the effects of the federal tax system (Brigham & Ehrhardt, 2008).

Introduction to Financial Statements

As mentioned above, accounting information is used to aid in the decision-making process and to measure the results after the decisions are made and implemented. You might say that Financial Accounting and the statements produced therefrom are the ultimate score keeping methodology in the business world. Accounting provides an important information base and a particular analytical orientation that helps the decision maker assess the potential financial implications of various business alternatives that are being considered.

The first known treatment of the subject of accounting was written in 1494, two years after the discovery of America. An Italian monk and mathematician Fr. Luca Paciolo, described an approach that had been developed by the Italian merchants of the time to account for their business ventures. Paciolo laid down the foundations of the basic “accounting model” that is still in use today.

The two financial statements that are of primary interest to us are the Balance Sheet (Statement of Financial Position) and the Income Statement (Statement of Earnings). The Balance Sheet is a statement of assets, liabilities and owners equity. The Income Statement describes revenues, expenses, and profit.

The Balance Sheet

The Balance Sheet reports the financial position of a business at a particular point in time. The accounting model for this document is:

Assets = Liabilities + Owners Equity

Assets are things of value owned by the business. There are several classes of assets:

Current Assets is a grouping that includes cash and other resources that are expected to be realized in cash or sold or consumed usually within one year – cash, short-term or temporary investments such as marketable securities, accounts receivable, inventories, etc.

Long-term Investments are assets the business intends to hold for the long-term – stocks and bonds of other companies, real estate, savings accounts.

Fixed Assets are those that have physical substance and that were acquired for use in operating the business – buildings, land, equipment, tools, furniture

Intangible Assets represent the value of intellectual property such as patents, trademarks, copyrights, franchises or goodwill. As you might guess this is a tough one to value.

Liabilities are debts or obligations owed by the business to the creditors. Here again, we have a couple of categories:

Current Liabilities are short-term debts that are expected to be repaid usually within a year. Some examples are short-term notes payable, accounts payable, wages payable, income taxes payable

Long-Term Liabilities or long-term debt are instruments like bonds or notes.

Owners Equity is a claim of the owners to the assets of a business (sometimes also referred to as partner’s equity or shareholder’s equity). The two general classes or categories of equity are contributed capital and retained earnings.

Most businesses, for-profit or not-for-profit, produce a Balance Sheet at least once per quarter, if not at the end of each month. This is an important tool both for managers and for investors (or donors) as it shows the overall health of the operation, and offers an objective basis for comparison, period over period or operation to operation.

The Income Statement

The Income Statement reports the results of a businesses’ operations for a specific period of time. This statement is simply a detailed explanation of the increases in Owner Equity represented by Net Income. The accounting model for this statement is:

Revenues – Expenses = Net Income

Revenues are inflows of cash and other items of value received for goods or services rendered. Accountants recognize these occurrences in the period or time frame when a sale is made. Revenues can be in the form of cash, accounts receivable, certain rights gained, etc. They are most generally classified as sales revenue or service revenue.

Expenses represent outflows of resources for goods and services used by a business to earn revenues. The period in which an expense is deemed to be incurred is the period in which the goods or services are received. Examples of expenses are: cost of using equipment or buildings (depreciation), cost of components that are assembled to produce the saleable end product, salaries, taxes, rent, utilities, advertising, etc.

Net Income = the excess of revenues over expenses

Net Loss = the excess of expenses over revenues

Break-even occurs when revenues = expenses

Before we take a look at a sample Income Statement we need to define one more term-Gross Profit.

Gross Profit = Revenues – Cost of Goods Sold

(i.e., the expense to produce the saleable item).

This represents total income before deducting expenses.

In very simple form an Income Statement has this format:

Revenue – Cost of Goods Sold = Gross Profit Gross Profit – Operating Expense, Interest, and taxes = Net Income

Investopedia offers a clear and concise explanation of the Income Statement:

https://www.investopedia.com/articles/04/022504.asp

As with the Balance Sheet above, the Income Statement is produced at least once per quarter, and in most operations each month. This important tool allows management to evaluate the income and expenses for the operation. Management can then make decisions on costs, prices, expenditures, investments, etc. that may impact operating results.

Focusing on Free Cash Flow

The firm’s free cash flow represents the amount of spendable cash available to investors-the providers of debt (creditors) and equity (owners)-after the firm has met all operating needs and paid for investments in net fixed assets and net current assets. It represents the summation of the net amount of cash flow available to creditors and owners during the period. Pages 73 – 87 and 106 – 111 of Finance Basics for Managers (coursepack) give you more information on the importance of cash and cash flow to the business.

The basic financial statements should be seen as the start, not the end of story of the operating entity. It makes no difference if we are looking at General Motors, General Electric, Massachusetts General Hospital or the General Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church; balance sheets and income statements are used by management (at all levels) as the starting point for more questions. An expense line that seems unusual (too high or too low) may be plumbed in depth to understand why? An excess of cash, receivables, payables or debt may trigger more analysis.

Question 33:     Business

Assignment 4: International Finance and Monetary System (100 marks total; 15%) Turn in Assignment 4 at the end of Lesson 12.

Introduction

In Lessons 10 to 12, you continued to examine international business issues related to economic co-operation, regional economic integration (trading blocs), and the international monetary system.

Instructions
Part A: Economic Cooperation and Regional Economic

Integration (30 marks)
Prepare a 2–3-page report (500–750 words, double-spaced) containing the following:

  1. Of which trading blocs are your two target countries members? If not part of a bloc, which bloc do you think they should join? Describe the advantages and disadvantages of being part of a trading bloc.
  2. How will Canada’s membership in NAFTA help or hinder your ability to take your product or service to your two target countries?
  3. What is the difference between a free trade agreement (such as NAFTA) and an economic union (such as the EU)?
  4. What would be the advantages and disadvantages for Canada to join a customs union with the USA and Mexico?
  5. What are the stated aims of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)? What are the risks of working with a business partner from ASEAN?

Part B: International Money Markets and Foreign Exchange (40 marks)

Prepare a 3–4-page report (750–1,000 words, double-spaced) that responds to the following:

Note
This assignment will contribute to the development of your Final Project.

  1. In many ways, the economy of a country is like the economy of a household. If the household spends more than it earns, then it faces difficult times. On the other hand, if it earns more than it spends, then it can save for a rainy day. Discuss the relevance of this analogy to the economy of a country. In particular, discuss imports, exports, the balance of payments, and the strengthening or weakening of the nation’s currency.
  2. When the USA experienced high inflation in the 1970s, Canada also experienced high inflation. Indeed, Canada was said to have “imported inflation” from the USA. If Canada’s exports to the USA were high, Canada’s foreign exchange reserves would have increased. Since exports create jobs, how could Canada have imported inflation from the USA?
  3. Suppose a Canadian firm wants to import canned beef from Brazil. The shape of graph of GDP per capita (in US$) from 1960 to 2005 (below) shows that Canada has a significantly higher rate of GDP increase and a higher rate of exports. Based on these two factors, which country had the harder currency during this period? Why? Which country do had the greater rate of inflation in this period? Why? Find the relevant PPP numbers for each country. Does the result match your analysis?
  4. Based on the 1960–2005 period, if a Canadian company were to import from Brazil and must pay in Brazilian reias when the goods are delivered in 90 days, should the company get the currency through the spot or the futures market? Why? Would it be different if the company had to pay in US$? Explain.

Part C: International Monetary Systems (30 marks)

Prepare a 2–4-page report (500–1,000 words, double-spaced) to reflect on and compare the current economic, political, technical and financial risks your international business will face entering the two countries you selected.

Considerations might include:

  • ·  Economic stability
  • ·  Currency fluctuations and inflation
  • ·  Rising nationalism and other political uncertainties
  • ·  Potential changes in administrative trade barriers
  • ·  Accounting practices
  • ·  Relevant cultural or technological forces
Hint:
A quick search of reliable Internet sources may help you formulate some thoughts about these and other factors and current events that will impact your planning. There is no right or wrong answer to this question. This is your opportunity to show your ability to look at data and draw some evidence-based conclusions that demonstrate your understanding of how political and economic pressures impact currency flows and international business.

Journal Reflection 2 (5%)
See the journal information sections on the Assignments Overview tab for

instructions, topics and marking information.

Module 3 and Module 4 require your participation in the reflection topics listed in the discussion board. At the end of Module 4, include a report of your reflections in Assignment 2.

The journal reflection requires you to look back at your contributions and to reflect on your learning experience.

Task

Your task is to explain the research of a published scientific article to a casual, non-academic reader. You need to use professional, accessible and non-technical language. To do this, you need to select one of two articles provided to you on Moodle to complete your assignment. You will need to deconstruct the article you have chosen and explain:

  1. Theories, concepts, or ideas that underpin the article
  2. Other research articles to provide background to the primary DRR article
  3. Why the study was conducted
  4. How the study was conducted
  5. What the findings were and how they can be applied in the real world
  6. How the findings have extended upon previous or have been used to inform subsequent research
  7. Some future avenues of research

You will submit your DRR online in the form of a word processing document in Word or PDF format via Moodle.

Articles to Choose from

There are two primary DRR articles you can choose from. You only need to select one article to complete your DRR on. The articles to choose from are:

  • High-frequency gamblers show increased resistance to extinction following partial reinforcement. By Rachel R. Horsley, Matthew Osbourne, Christine Norman and Timothy Wells (2012)

OR

  • Executive functioning in chronic alcoholism and Korsakoff syndrome. By Malini Maharasingam, Jamie A. B. Macniven and Oliver J. Mason (2013)

You only need to write on ONE of these articles. Please read both and decide which of the two articles you would prefer to write your assignment on. Choosing an article you enjoy is one of the key characteristics of doing well in this assessment – if you like the topic, you’ll want to read and write about it more!!).

Referencing Style

Psychology has a specific referencing style that you will use throughout your studies and beyond. The referencing style for this assignment is the American Psychological Association (APA) version 6. You need to format your assignment according to APA format.
